Hot, Hot Hot! It’s Late Summer!

Welcome to another information-packed issue of Boomer Women’s World.
It’s suddenly August and the weather continues to be hot and stormy here in the Midwest. Earlier this week, our little corner of the world experienced an intense rain. Water, water everywhere. We had somewhere between twelve and fifteen inches of rain fall in twelve hours. Much of it coming down in the first three hours.
Thankfully my basement is only a little damp, and no harm came to us physically. Not everyone was so lucky. Many roads and homes were destroyed by this storm, and at least three lives were lost.
This experience had me counting my blessings, which is probably what led me to compile the bodacious list of inspirational quotes you’ll find in this issue. We’ve included memorable quotes from Oprah, Mother Jones, Indira Gandhi and Lady Gaga…who knew so many different women have said so many inspirational things?
I’m not sure which one is my favorite… Be sure to check them out, and let me know which ones speak to you!
Other Issue Highlights:
- Check in with our NABBW Associates – More than a dozen new articles on topics ranging from what you can learn from celebrity garage sales, to weeding; from acing the job interview to creating a delicious dessert – meringues with summer fruit.
- Find out what’s been on our collective Boomer Women’s minds this month with the links to Boomer Women Speak… our posters just may have figured out how to eliminate Federal debt by the time you read this!
- Be sure to check out BOTH Member of the Month stories. We’re featuring two inspirational women: Nancy Gotter Gates and Mara Purl. Very different lives – yet both have accomplished so much.
- Don’t forget to visit our Member News section. We’ve lots of good stuff there, too.
And with that point made, I’ll sign off by reminding you that I’m listening, and I look forward to hearing from you!
Blessings!
Anne

This month we bring you a wealth of inspirational quotes from a variety of amazing women – everyone from Oprah to Eleanor Roosevelt, from Mother Jones to Lady Gaga. If you have some other quotes which guide you, please feel free to send them so we can share them with the rest of our audience.
It is this belief in a power larger than myself and other than myself, which allows me to venture into the unknown and even the unknowable.

-Louisa May Alcott
With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.
-Eleanor Roosevelt
If you feel incomplete, you alone must fill yourself with love in all your empty, shattered spaces.
-Oprah Winfrey
“Cautious, careful people always casting about to preserve their reputation or social standards never can bring about reform. Those who are really in earnest are willing to be anything or nothing in the world’s estimation, and publicly and privately, in season and out, avow their sympathies with despised ideas and their advocates, and bear the consequences.”
-Susan B. Anthony
If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it.
-Margaret Fuller
My address is like my shoes. It travels with me. I abide where there is a fight against wrong.
-Mother Jones
Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.

When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others.

My philosophy is that not only are you responsible for your life, but doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.
-Oprah Winfrey
Don’t compromise yourself. You are all you’ve got.

We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily difference we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.
-Marian Wright Edelman
I don’t want to get to the end of my life and find that I lived just the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well.
-Diane Ackerman
Many persons have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.

-Anne Frank
As you become more clear about who you really are, you’ll be better able to decide what is best for you – the first time around.
-Oprah Winfrey
If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities, and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse gift will find a fitting place.
-Margaret Mead

Nancy Gotter Gates
Nancy’s taken the concept of a second career seriously. She retired early from her career as a public relations professional so that she could seriously pursue her hobby of writing, which she had enjoyed since childhood.
At first she concentrated on writing articles and poems. Next she moved on to mastering the short story genre. After publishing about 30 short stories Nancy turned to novel writing. She’s been writing novels for about fifteen years now, and has six to her credit.
The first four are mysteries featuring protagonists Tommi Poag & Emma Daniels, and the last two – Sand Castles and Life Studies – are women’s fiction. All of them, she says, have a common theme, which is that older women are clever, hard-working, intuitive, and caring.
To find out what motivates her, read more here.
